Joyce Marie Brown founded Cultural Arts Natural Design International, an organization that served the Tallahassee community from 2009 to 2016. A dedicated artist, educator, community organizer, and advocate, she brought culture, creativity, technology, and service together to create meaningful opportunities for youth and families.
Her work extended from Tallahassee to St. Croix, where she addressed domestic violence and community empowerment. As a cofounder of the Tallahassee Food Network, Joyce also helped advance food sovereignty, community gardening, youth engagement, and arts-centered outreach.
Her legacy is rooted in cultural pride, artistic expression, natural wellness, purposeful design, and service to the community. Her life reflected the Akan proverb she often shared: “When actions speak, words are meaningless.”
In 2026, Jewel D. Brown founded Cultural Arts Natural Design Innovation Corporation—CANDI—as a new and independent nonprofit inspired by her mother’s legacy.
CANDI carries the foundational values of culture, creativity, education, and community service forward while expanding the vision through entrepreneurship, leadership development, financial literacy, wellness, and innovative learning.
The GEMS Youth Enrichment Program transitioned to CANDI as its flagship program, creating a foundation for the organization’s continued growth and community impact.
